In addition to Best Actress (Emma Stone), Poor Things won Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup & Hair, and Best Special Visual Effects. The night wasn’t great for Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Check out our list of the biggest moments from the 2024 BAFTAs.

Michael J Fox Gets The Biggest Standing Ova

What a treat to see MICHAEL J. FOX present Best Picture

Suddenly, David Tennant announced Michael J Fox was presenting Best Film. When Fox was wheeled on stage with Parkinson’s disease, the whole room applauded. The actor stood up on the podium and presented the award after handing it to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Movies can change your day, your outlook, and sometimes even your life, Fox said as he announced the nominees.

Christopher Nolan’s Acceptance Speech Thanks ‘that Dude’ Robert Downey Jr

The acceptance speech for Robert Downey Jr’s Best Supporting Actor award was incredible! He reflected on his career and shouted out to Christopher Nolan. When I was 15, I aspired to be Peter O’Toole.

At 25, I worked with Richard Attenborough and Anthony Hopkins. “I finally understood why Dickie thought Tony would be a better role model than Peter,” Downey Jr said at 35.

During my 42nd year, I worked for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a British flair. After that, I played Tony in the MCU for about 12 years,” he continued, “And recently, that guy, Chris Nolan, suggested I try an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to maybe regain my credibility.” This has been an exceptional year, I’d like to share it with my fellow nominees.”

Princess Williams Rubs Shoulders With David Beckham

Despite his wife, Katherine, the Princess of Wales, recovering from her recent abdominal surgery, the Prince of Wales attended this year’s awards alone. As president of the academy since 2010, Prince William wore a blue blazer, black trousers, a white shirt, a black bow tie and black shoes. There were football legends like David Beckham and Cate Blanchett mingling with him.

A Smash Hit From 2001, Sophie Ellis-Bextor Performs ‘Murder On The Dance Floor’

Featured in Emerald Fennell’s BAFTA-nominated Saltburn was Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s 2001 smash hit. In a Sophie Couture black dress with a deep-V sweetheart neckline and voluminous peplum high-low tulle skirt, Ellis Bextor sang the song surrounded by dancers who showed off their moves. People in attendance screamed and applauded for her performance.

The Memoriam Section Forgot Matthew Perry

Along with the Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon snubs, Matthew Perry wasn’t included in the Memoriam segment of the BAFTA Awards. With a special arrangement of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’, Hannah Waddingham performed Perry’s tribute, and his fans were upset he wasn’t there.

BAFTA replied, “Matthew Perry will be remembered at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards.” According to PEOPLE, it wrote, “Matthew Perry will be remembered at the TV Awards ceremony (sic).”
